What is a Channel?
We would like to show you a description here but the site won’t allow us. Channels are specific workgroups with a workspace, allowing users a place to communicate with entire departments or committees on specific topics. They operate the same way a chat room, or group text on your phone or in Facebook Messenger do, with a few key differences. This video from Slack gives a basic rundown on Channels, as does this portion of their website.
Channels can be created and sorted by a variety of topics. A channel can be made centered on your particular work group. A channel can be made for members of a work project, where the subject of conversation centers on the project at hand. Topics are also a possibility -- say the creation of a break-room channel for coworkers to share messages that may not be specifically work-related but are certainly morale-related.
How to Join a Channel

To Join a Channel started by someone else, in any version of the client you can click the '+ Add a channel' option. From there, if a channel is public, you can search for it using terms you know the name includes. If a channel is private, you will need to be invited by the channel administrator. Project-related channels are likely best kept private, just to be sure the project participants are the only ones with access to your discussions and documentation.
The MSL has created a private channel for MSL faculty/staff to communicate in general chat with all MSL personnel. To join this channel, please contact the channel moderator, Pamela Coleman, once you have registered your tamu.slack account,so she can invite you.
How to Create a Channel
Every Slack user also has the ability to create a channel. To do so, first go to the purple sidebar in your Slack client. Again, this can be done in any version of the client (web, mobile, desktop). To the right of the word 'Channels' is a + sign. When you click it, a menu pops up titled 'Create A Channel.' From here, you name your channel, decide if it is to be private or not, and click the 'Create' button. There's also another type of private channels for direct messages with just one coworker. These windows are made automatically when you look up a coworker's name and message them. There are no limits to how many channels of any of the mentioned types, so don't feel worried about running out of your allotted amount of channels.
How to Leave a Channel

All good things must come to an end, including channels. When a project wraps up, when you feel comfortable enough using Slack to migrate away from the base channels, it's time to let a channel go. To do that, right-click on a channel name, and select 'Leave Channel.' For mobile, this is a bit trickier -- there is a downward pointing arrow to the right of the channel name on a grey bar. You tap on the arrow, and it provides you information about the channel and lists the 'leave' function.
